BYD Expands Long-Range Options for 4 Affordable Hybrid Models (2026)

Get ready, EV enthusiasts! BYD is shaking up the affordable hybrid market with a major upgrade. They're about to launch long-range versions of four popular plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs): the Qin Plus DM-i, Qin L DM-i, Seal 05 DM-i, and Seal 06 DM-i. But what's the big deal? These new models boast battery ranges exceeding 210 kilometers!

This is a significant leap, effectively doubling the range of existing comparable PHEV models. Imagine, potentially a whole week of driving on a single charge! With a full tank and a full battery, these cars are projected to travel over 2,110 km, and they can charge from 30% to 80% in a mere 20 minutes.

BYD is packing these new variants with high-capacity blade batteries, specifically designed for PHEVs, boosting energy density. They're also integrating an AI energy management system, promising to double the battery range without compromising performance or adding weight.

Let's break down the current offerings to understand the upgrade. The Qin Plus DM-i currently offers two versions, starting at RMB 79,800. These come with 7.68-kWh and 15.8-kWh LFP blade batteries, providing CLTC ranges of 55 km and 128 km respectively. The Qin L DM-i offers two variants, priced at RMB 96,800 and RMB 106,800, both with 15.87-kWh batteries and a 128 km CLTC range. The Seal 05 DM-i has a single variant starting at RMB 79,800, also with a 15.87-kWh battery and a 128 km CLTC range. Finally, the Seal 06 DM-i has two variants, priced at RMB 96,800 and RMB 106,800, and features a 15.87-kWh battery pack with a 128 km CLTC range.

The Qin series is currently BYD's best-selling model, with a whopping 60,667 units sold in December. The Seal series also performed well, with 44,602 units sold in the same month.

BYD is the world's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, and by the end of 2025, their cumulative sales of PHEV models exceeded 7.86 million units. They also stated that BYD accounts for one in every two PHEVs sold in China. Moreover, BYD's full-year 2025 BEV sales reached 2,256,714 units, surpassing Tesla's 1,636,129 units for the first time.

But here's where it gets controversial... Could this move by BYD signal a shift in the PHEV market, making them even more appealing than fully electric vehicles for some consumers? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
