Netflix's Little House on the Prairie: A Disappointing Adaptation (2026)

Netflix's 'Little House on the Prairie' is a scattered CliffsNotes version of the classic series, and it's a missed opportunity. The original show, spanning 200 episodes, allowed for a deep exploration of the characters and their growth, something the new adaptation lacks. The Netflix version, with its limited time, feels rushed and lacks the texture and immersion of the original. The cast delivers earnest performances, but the show's overreliance on montage and a cloying score hinders their ability to authentically act. The series is haunted by the ghosts of war, displacement, and its onscreen predecessor, yet it fails to grapple with the more serious questions it raises. The best episode, directed by Erica Tremblay, suggests a show settling into a rhythm closer to the '70s series, but this too comes and goes. Netflix's 'Little House on the Prairie' is a compressed version of the original, rushing through storytelling while setting up for more to come. It feels like the fording of the river from the start of the season, making it to the opposite bank only barely. The show's aspirations to be a more mature telling of the story are undermined by its failure to be honest about the sinister truths of its subject. In my opinion, the Netflix adaptation falls short of the original's depth and emotional strength, and it's a missed opportunity for a compelling revival.
