Steph Curry Offers Blunt Assessment of Giannis Antetokounmpo's Decision to Stay with the Bucks
As Steph Curry ages, the Warriors front office is acutely aware of the need to bolster their roster. The recent pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, a move that could have reshaped the team's future, ended without success.
General Manager Mike Dunleavy's aggressive bid for Antetokounmpo last week was unsuccessful, but it paved the way for the acquisition of Kristaps Porziņģis, a versatile big man.
Curry, in a recent interview with ESPN's Anthony Slater, discussed the Warriors' pursuit of Antetokounmpo and the team's current strategy.
"I wasn't directly involved in the negotiations," Curry said. "I was aware of the offer, as expected. Ultimately, no deal was struck, and that's the current situation."
Curry's primary goal remains a fifth championship ring, a feat that becomes more challenging with the recent injury to Jimmy Butler. However, Porziņģis, when healthy, is a formidable player.
"Our goal is to maintain a competitive edge in the playoffs and finish the regular season strongly," Curry emphasized.
The Warriors' playoff run last season was cut short by Curry's hamstring injury. Despite Jonathan Kuminga's impressive performance against the Timberwolves, the team fell short in the Western Conference Semifinals.
Porziņģis, a stretch big man that Warriors coach Steve Kerr has long sought, is a free agent at the end of this season. This flexibility means that even if the partnership doesn't work out, neither party is committed to the future.
Antetokounmpo's potential arrival would have significantly boosted the team's championship hopes. However, the Bucks' high asking price included trading Draymond Green, a cornerstone of the Warriors' success for over a decade.
Golden State chose to retain its future draft picks, opting for a different strategy with Porziņģis.
